THE NEUTRALIZATION TECHNIQUES AND ROBBERY OR BURGLARY IN URBAN AREAS: THE CASE OF ERZURUM
Abstracts
As crime is a significant matter for society in urban areas, describing and analyzing this problem is essential for researchers. Due to high number of crime and structural complexity in urban society, urban areas are in the primary interest of urbanologists. Neutralization theory supports that offenders and suspects justify committing crime by using several neutralization techniques, including legitimizing their wrong-doings. This study investigates whether suspects of property crimes, such as burglary or theft, use neutralization techniques. Suspects’ statement data was collected from Erzurum province and analyzed using statistical techniques. Frequency and cross tabulation were used to create a contingency table. Findings of the study show that suspects generally use the technique of denial of responsibility of committing the crime, and in most cases they use neutralization techniques in an attempt to burglary or theft.
